Properties of Matter | Elements and Compounds Projects | 5/6

There are lots of ingredients and compounds in Mouth Wash.

Active ingredients used in mouthwash include:
– Cetylpyridinium chloride;
– Chlorhexidine;
– Essential oils;
– Fluoride;
– Peroxide.

The Ingredients I have chosen for this project are Fluoride and Peroxide. Here are there Compounds and Elemental make up.

Compound Element(s)
Fluoride NaF Sodium Fluoride
Peroxide H2O2 Di-Hydrogen Di-oxide

Purposes of NaF and H2O2

        NaF (Sodium Fluoride) –  inorganic compound with the formula NaF. It is a colorless or white solid that is readily soluble in water. It is a common source of fluoride in the production of pharmaceuticals and is used to prevent cavities.

You can also find NaF in Table Salts and  chemical syntheses.

 H2O2(Di-Hydrogen Di-oxide) – Hydrogen peroxide is used as a bleach, a disinfectant, and an oxidizer for rocket fuel and submarine propellant.

You can also find H2O2 in Bleach and Acne Medication.

Name Chemical Symbol Atomic Number Abundance on Earth or Universe When was it Discovered?
Sodium Na 11 Sodium makes up about 2.6% of the Earths Crust and is a very reactive element, so it is never found in free space. 1807
Fluoride F 9 Among the elements, fluorine ranks 24th in universal abundance and 13th in terrestrial abundance, Meaning that it is likely to come across Fluoride in Space and on Earth.

Hydrogen

H

1 Very Abundant, it is one of the most common Element in the Galaxy. Most if not all stars are made up of Hydrogen. 1766
Oxygen

O

8

Common on Habitable planets with Water or a Nitrogen/Oxygen based Atmosphere. Oxygen is also a Key element in Water, Any Moon or Planet that has Ice or Water on it has a abundance of Oxygen.
